[ Anyone who frequents Pour Judgment would recognize him. Those who train at Phoenix Rising would probably also consider his face familiar. It was a slow night at Pour Judgment where he was comfortable to steal a little time away to ask a question that had been on his mind recently.
The video jostled for a second before settling on his face. ]
So after a few conversations that I've had and read, seems like a number of us pulled into this nightmare are orphans. Yours truly included.
[ His head dropped a little to a side as he continued. ]
I don't know if that means anything but it isn't the norm in my world. Neither is having abilities but that seems to be a thing here too.
[ Diego straightened again. No contempt or disdain or smugness to be found. He was serious. ]
Look, you don't have to say anything you don't want to but I think I'm onto something so if you wanna send me a message privately or come talk to me rather than put your business on blast, I'm open to that too.
I'm not expecting Daddy Warbucks to come save us but wouldn't frown at still teaching Miss Hannigan a lesson.

There are no t-shirts and sometimes the snacks are okay, but for the most part the whole thing sucks.
As for abilities.
Pyrokinesis. Telekinesis. Empathic reading. Mental domination. Danger sense. Telepathy if I’m close enough to someone. Not distance-wise.

[ Diego gave her a wink with a smirk. He liked her response. Maybe there was a special club for sassy orphans. ]
Whoa, whoa, whoa... Are you serious on the abilities? Don't set me on fire. It's just a question.
no subject
[ She doesn’t care about T-shirt’s. This is just a fun conversation. To a degree. ]
Yep. And I won’t. I can honestly say I’m not a fan of how people on fire smell. Plus so far you’re not awful.
no subject
[ And he'd said that before she voiced him not being awful. Diego was mad he hadn't met this kid already. ]
Yeah, burning flesh can't be a good thing. Sucks you even know what that's like. But hey, you can protect yourself. That's never a bad thing.
[ He lightened from the serious face, curious. ] What's your favorite thing, out of all the shit you can do?
no subject
[ He might be lightening up some, but her face falls and she looks uncomfortable. Something in her hurts at the question. And she looks a tad angry. Not at him. Just at life in general. ]
None of it.

I wasn't an orphan, but I might as well have been, for all my mom paid attention to me. Always busy with work, or her social life, or anything but me. My sister pretty much raised me. And even she couldn't always be there.
no subject
And maybe Sam had caught him a time or two when he tried to play peekaboo thinking that no one was paying attention.]That sucks. Your mom sounds like the guy who adopted me and my siblings. At least the mother he gave us was always there. I get why you look after Lou the way you do now. She's one of us too, right?
no subject
I'm sorry your dad wasn't around, either. It's bullshit.
no subject
Thanks. You'd think if he paid for us kids, he'd want something to do with us but I stopped trying to guess how he thinks a long time ago.
Lou's lucky to have you. [ And with that, Sam received a rare genuine smile from Diego. ]

My biological mom was in a coma, and then died. My adopted mom was there when my dad died, so she took me in. Would've thought I was lucky, being the president's adopted son. But it felt like -- I don't know. She was always busy, sure, but it was like she was making sure she was always busy. Like it was on purpose.
[Sam sighs and rubs his hands over his face, but he gives Diego a smile back after that.] I'm lucky to have Lou. Don't pretend you haven't fallen in love with her, too. I've seen you playing games with her.

But you're not the first person to notice the bit about people having abilities.

[ Since it wasn't a private conversation, he refrained from asking if Bruce was her daddy kink. Not because he wanted to save Jessica the embarrassment but because Diego really didn't want to know the answer to that question. ]
Do you know anyone who doesn't have a special skill set?
no subject
[ Which would probably get him in trouble but it is nice to know Diego can refrain...sometimes. ]
Honestly, not so far?
Do you want to switch this conversation to private?
permanent encryption
[ He opted not to comment on the hairpiece bit. Maybe Diego liked that she didn't seem to know Wayne intimately. ...Not that he'd admit to it. ]
If this is about some daddy kink you've got, I'm switching it back.
no subject
Are you sure? Because you're the one that brought it up first.

[ She tilts her head a bit, looking at him curiously but also being a bit smirky over getting the reference. At least for a moment. ]
I'm not really an orphan. I mean, my dad is dead and my mom is an addict, so I was mostly on my own but does that count? Can I still be in the club or support group you're building?
Or will there be a powered people group?
permanent encryption
You sound like an orphan to me. What about Waffles? I think we're already a powered group. Haven't heard anyone mentioned yet that doesn't have some kind of ability.
no subject
It kind of felt like it sometimes. But no, Ty actually has awesome parents. They're strict but it's because they just want him to be safe and they love him. But yeah, there seems to be a lot of powered people. Not that I've seen many say outright what they have.
no subject
Then they were talking seriously and he finally acted like the grownup he was supposed to be. ]
Awesome biological parents?
[ It stung to even ask that. Grace was as good a mom as any. Better than most, in fact. Biology didn't have to do anything with parenting. Yet he needed to hear her answer. ]
no subject
[ Honestly, she is kind of happy for Ty and the fact that his parents are good people. She wouldn't wish the opposite on him. ]
I thought my Dad was good before he died but I found out a little while ago that he wasn't the man I thought he was.
So, you know, good for Ty that he doesn't have to deal with that shit.

Not to throw a wrench in your theory, but I'm going to be a statistical outlier for you; I'm not an orphan.
[ But he did have a pretty bad childhood, so maybe that's the key here. ]
no subject
[ Diego hated asking that given his own mother but it was for science. ]
no subject
Yes... until I was 10. My father wasn't an active part of my life from that point on.
[ That was when he went to prison for being a serial killer. ]
no subject
So partial orphan then. That seems kind of common too.
[ The guy was a familiar face from Pour Judgment but Diego never held a conversation with him there before. ...As he often didn't with patrons. He was there to do a job, not make friends. Except he actually did like networking and getting to know people. ]
I've seen you at Pour Judgment. I'm Diego.
no subject
Yeah. [ He nods. ] Okay, I'll give you that. I was a partial orphan.
[ It makes sense. His father made choices that forced him to have to abandon his family. ]
Malcolm. You work security there, right?
