I wasn't trying to do that-I was just concerned because I went through a lot of bullying when I was little and I just don't want the same thing to happen to her so I might have told her that if someone tried to hurt her she should kick them.
Peter.. you're a disaster. And of course you have detention. I told them to give it to you. And what the hell? How did you manage to hit your head on a locker?
[He sighed and shook his head.]
She said you were very distressed and sad. Why weren't you honest with me about what was really going on today? Why wouldn't you tell me it was that bad?
What? Why would you do that? It wouldn't have blown up if it wasn't faulty, that's hardly my fault!
[ He pauses and just makes a face. ]
I'm not sad. And it really wasn't that bad-I just didn't super appreciate getting laughed at when I hit my head, that's all. I was getting up from testing out my locker combination aaaaand BAM. But I'm okay, really.
I'm just worried about Alice. No one should have to go through that-especially someone as nice and polite as she is.
No they shouldn't. If you believe that, why aren't you doing something about it for you? Why is it okay for her to kick people and not okay for you to stand up for yourself? Think about how it feels for you to hear about someone picking on her. That's how I feel when I hear about it happening to you. Except for you, I'm also irritated and know you're capable of standing up for yourself whereas she might need an advocate.
[ He sucks in a breath and sets the margarita down as he listens to Tony's lecture about why he should stick up for himself and admittedly he hadn't really thought about it in that light but at the same time it wasn't like he couldn't just deal with it so he's still not sure why it matters so much. ]
Because I don't care, okay? It just doesn't bother me like it used to. Yeah, I could stand up for myself and put a stop to it, but what then? Who do they move onto? What do people start to think of me? And besides, we all know how my life works-if it's going good it's about to go bad and being a scapegoat is also just another way of me protecting someone that might not be able to handle it-someone that decides to bring a gun someday. So I decided I'd just deal with it-ignore it where I could but deal with it otherwise.
But she's seven, and no seven year old should have to deal with that-I shouldn't have had to deal with that but I did. And because I did I don't want anyone else to have to deal with it.
We're in agreement with Alice, but Peter, the point I'm making is it's not all about you. You think you can go solo here and take all the hurt that might have gone to someone else and protect everyone.
That's not what happens. We're hurt because you're hurt. There are times you can't help that, but is this one of those times?
